The surface readings will be about 30-50% cooler than the actual flue gas temps. That is why the range scales on a stove pipe thermometer start saying "Overfire" or "Too hot" starting around 500F.

In my case 1 3/8:12 pitch (almost flat) even the minimum 3 1/2" protrusion is sufficient to meet the 18" horizontal setback. I assume the tech people at Selkirk know this stuff.

Another option is to use single wall pipe with a UL listed pipe shield on the area where you need the clearance reduction.

I would like to run the stove top temp to 600 as Jotul says the best range is 400-600. **All temp readings are the surface temperatures. 275 to 500 is what my manual says for my flue. and this is surface readings as well.
