It might look a long way from the harbour but it’s well worth the walk to see the stunning view from the top. There’s not a lot to the fortress but don’t let that put you off as you can see more by g…Full review by Barry M

Beautiful walk all the way up from the harbour. Lovely landscaping from the gate to the fort itself. 10e entry is worth it. Scenic views of all of Hvar. Definitely recommend it. The walk up and back …Full review by 35aoifem

Yes, you can taxi up the back way. However we are in our seventies , reasonably fit but definitely not athletic, and we were able to walk it fairly easily. The first section of steps from the main square are pretty steep, so take that slowly with rests if required. The next and longer section is on a much wider and much less steep path. Take your time and enjoy the amazing views!
Thank to the many many people who have responded to my question about Hvar. I will be there in early October, so I cannot 'review' nor write about my experience, but I am so overwhelmed & grateful for all of your suggestions. Our tour will include a free afternoon (+4 hrs) so I hope we can hike up the Fortress at the end of the afternoon. Seeing a sunset over the Island would be stunning. Thank you all.

You will enjoy Hvar a lot. It is such a special place, the fortress is beautiful but that's not everything. There is so much charm and character to the island. It has a great market, nice restaurants and one of the best little shops. I could easily spend the whole day there, I found that 5 hours was not enough for us to see everything and relax.
I will be in Split in Feb. 2017 How do I travel by public transport by bus or ferry to Hvar? Then from Hvar to Korcula?

Catch a ferry from Split to Hvar, about 1 hour trip. (Stay at the Hvar Palace Hotel) fantastic position with walk to Fortress very close, need only couple of hours. Ferry trip to Kocula about 90 minutes. Ferry trip from Hvar to Dubrovnic about 3 hours, a must do! You can then catch a ferry from Dubrovnic to Bari in Italy. We then caught a train (9 hours) to Venice, via Bologna. It will be very cold in February.
