Social media rumors that the California governor wanted to secede his state from the Union went viral this week.

Gov. Gavin Newsom formally proclaimed Monday as Veterans Day in California, which came with a major announcement.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom granted five pardons to veterans who served in America’s Armed Forces on Monday while also beginning one posthumous pardon process. The pardons come as America celebrates Veterans Day.

In addition to pardoning the five veterans, the governor also announced he was seeking a posthumous pardon for a Medal of Honor-recipient.

The five veterans, who served honorably in the armed forces, were convicted of crimes such as robbery and drug charges decades ago, according to the governor's office.
