JD Vance criticized Denmark for neglecting Greenland's people and security during a visit to Pituffik Space Base, and Greenlandic officials had mixed reactions.
Vance called on the people of Denmark to “cut a deal” with the US, accusing the country of leaving Greenland open to suspected Russian and Chinese intrusions.
But 1,500km (930 miles) south of America's Pituffik base, in Greenland's capital, Nuuk, the American story vied for attention with a very different local event on Friday. "We will prevail," a smiling crowd sang, at a ceremony to celebrate the formation of a new coalition government for Greenland.
The agreement was reached ahead of Vice President JD Vance 's arrival on the Arctic island on Friday. He and second lady Usha Vance are expected to visit the Pituffik Space Base on a scaled-back version of a trip that had angered officials in Greenland and Denmark.
