Romania's prime minister has announced his resignation, a day after the governing coalition’s joint candidate failed to advance to the runoff in the rerun of the presidential election.

Social Democrat Marcel Ciolacu quit after his government’s candidate, Crin Antonescu, failed to advance to the run-off vote on May 18.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned his post on Monday after the candidate backed by his pro-Western coalition failed to make it to the run-off in a presidential election. His centre-left Socialists would withdraw from the coalition,
