Two firefighters were hospitalized after falling through the floor of a burning building in the Marina. The building, apparently under construction, was unoccupied.

The 6.9 magnitude disaster, 36 years ago on Friday, killed 63 people, injured 3,800 and destroyed the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. A natural gas main rupture in the Marina District caused a fire to break out, and the neighborhood’s hydrants ran dry.

A LONG-STALLED PLAN to build a new marina at San Francisco's Treasure Island has gained momentum with the formation of a partnership that will provide capital for the $25 million project, according to the companies involved.

The epicenter of the earthquake was along the San Andreas Fault, about 56 miles south of San Francisco and 10 miles north of Santa Cruz.
