A student is dead following a stabbing at Maryvale High School, Phoenix Police said on Tuesday. The suspect, who is also a student, is in custody.

That was the case on Aug. 19, when a stabbing incident at the West Valley school left one student dead and another injured. The school was evacuated and one student was detained after the stabbing.Start the day smarter.

Horne added that Maryvale has safety plans in place and a school safety officer (SSO) on campus during school hours. The difference between an SSO and a school resource officer (SRO) is that SROs are on school campuses full-time while SSOs are there one day a week, Horne said.
