Winter weather warnings have been issued in 11 states amid a massive snowstorm that is expected to dump up to five feet of snow in some areas. The warnings were issued in Virginia, Montana, Maryland, California, West Virginia, Idaho, Nevada, South Carolina, Colorado, Alaska, and Utah.

Snow made its first appearance of the season Thursday and Friday across portions of the eastern U.S., with flakes reported as far south as the mountains of North Carolina. The sudden cold snap and first flakes mark a stark departure from the mild fall of recent weeks in the region.

Some Chicago residents are waking up to the first snow of the season and there's more to come. During the early Thursday morning commute, expect a few passing flurries/snow showers but no major road impacts.
