City unveils historic marker at Zion Cemetery
TAMPA — City officials unveiled a historic designation marker that they hoped would be among the first steps in restoring dignity to those buried at Tampa’s lost Zion Cemetery, a segregation-era Black burial ground that was developed over. “May those interred here finally rest in peace,” the plaque reads.

The 2.5-acre cemetery, which is believed to be Tampa’s first burial ground for African American residents, was created in 1901. In the mid 1920s, the cemetery was owned by white businessmen who sold parts of the land for development.
