Indian opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal picked Delhi minister Atishi to replace him as chief minister of the capital territory on Tuesday, allowing him to focus on winning a fresh mandate in elections due next year after getting bail in a graft case.

NEW DELHI, (REUTERS) – Arvind Kejriwal picked Delhi minister Atishi to replace him as chief minister of the capital territory on September 17, allowing him to focus on winning a fresh mandate in elections due next year after getting bail in a graft case.

Atishi is a leading face of AAP and the Delhi govt after Kejriwal was detained in prison in March in a corruption case

Kejriwal handed his resignation to Delhi's Lt. Gov. VK Saxena after serving the post for more than nine years.

Aam Aadmi Party senior officials have confirmed that Delhi's designated Chief Minister Atishi alongside her cabinet will officially take oaths of office on 21.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) party had initially decided that only Atishi would be sworn in, however, it was later determined that her council of ministers would also take the oath.

Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday said that Rajya Sabha MP Atishi will take oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21.

After being elected as the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislative party in Delhi, Atishi expressed her gratitude by saying, "First and foremost, I want to thank Delhi Chief Minister and my mentor,

Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena on Wednesday proposed September 21 for the swearing-in of Chief Minister-designate Atishi following the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal from the post.
