International Paper said on Thursday it was shutting down four production facilities in the U.S. and laying off about 1% of its global workforce to tackle softer demand for its packaging products from e-commerce and consumer goods firms.

The Campti facility, known as the Red River Mill, produces about 800,000 tons of containerboard annually and is the largest private employer in Natchitoches Parish.

The Pactiv Evergreen packaging plant, 2315 Miller Road, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, will close this year, impacting 153 employees. Employee separations are expected to begin on April 11, and be completed on or before June 13, 2025, according to a WARN notice filed by the company, announcing the plant closure. The Greif facility in Fitchburg makes containerboard, a paperboard used to make corrugated boxes and other packaging materials. It is made from a combination of paper pulp, recycled paper and other materials. The closing is expected by the end of May, the company said.
