If you need your phone to last just a little longer than normal, it's a good idea to turn on low power mode or battery saver mode. This essentially limits background activity, reduces the screen's brightness and adjusts your phone's settings so that only the most functional apps stay active.
Alternately or in tandem, you may want to go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn on Auto-Brightness. This adjusts levels based on your iPad's ambient light sensor. You can leave this on and still manually change brightness, although Apple doesn't make it entirely clear if you're then adjusting things in a relative sense.
