An American airline mechanic has been freed by the Taliban after being held in Afghanistan for more than two years. George Glezmann, who was detained in December 2022 while visiting as a tourist, arrived by plane in Qatar on Thursday evening before travelling back to the US.

George Glezmann was detained while traveling in the country after the Taliban’s victory in the war. Secretary of State Marco Rubio thanked Qatar for helping to secure his release.

George Glezmann, an American citizen who has spent more than two years in detention in Afghanistan was released on Thursday and is now on his way to the United States, a source with knowledge of the situation told CNN.
