Trump extends TikTok shutdown deadline for fourth time after reaching framework deal with China
President Donald Trump formally extended the deadline to keep the social media app TikTok available in the United States until Dec. 16
The December 16 deadline is just roughly one month short of the one-year anniversary of TikTok briefly going dark as a result of a U.S. ban going into effect. In January of this year, TikTok blocked U.S. users from accessing the app before Trump, who was in the midst of his inauguration weekend, extended their deadline.
The rocky rollout of the president’s official presence on the social platform showcases the challenges he faces among younger people online.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the US and China have only a 'framework' for a TikTok deal, which Trump is expected to discuss with Chinese President Xi on Friday.

Trump Delays TikTok Ban Again
President Donald Trump extended the deadline for a TikTok sale to Dec. 16 on Tuesday, delaying a potential shutdown of the app, hours after he told reporters he had reached a “deal” with Chinese officials on the app’s future.
Trump backed a TikTok deal as Beijing confirmed the U.S. app will still run on Chinese algorithm tech despite years of national security concerns.
The Trump administration waxes optimistic about getting to a long-delayed resolution for TikTok in the US -- just not yet.
"A deal was also reached on a 'certain' company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save. They will be very happy!" Trump wrote in a Truth Social post shortly after 8 a.m. ET on Sept. 15. Trump also said he will be speaking to Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sept. 19, adding that their relationship "remains a very strong one."
For the fourth time since the start of his second term in office, Trump issued an order delaying enforcement of a 2024 law.
