The New York Rangers has a rough night on Tuesday. Not only did the team fall further back in the Metropolitan Division standings with a 4-0 loss to the Hurricanes at home, but they also helped validate every part of the blockbuster Mikko Rantanen trade.
Carolina Hurricanes right wing Andrei Svechnikov tallied three points during their 4-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday evening. Svechnikov would open the scoring in the first minute when he beat New York netminder Igor Shesterkin with a wrist shot.
This former Bruins star is off to a nice start with his new club. On Jan. 25, former Boston Bruins forward Taylor Hall was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in the monster Mikko Rantanen three-team blockbuster.
This all while the clubs around them in the playoff push continue to pick up points. That’s what has made the Rangers situation so precarious despite their uptick in play lately.
After a late Rangers breakaway bid was broken up in front of the Canes net, Mikko Rantanen carried the puck the other way and played a give-and-go with Jackson Blake as they entered the offensive zone, then set up Svechnikov alone in front for a tap-in dagger with 31 seconds left in the frame.
After dropping their second straight game, the Rangers have little room for error at this point in the season.
Andrei Svechnikov scored twice and added an assist, Frederik Andersen made 22 saves, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers 4-0.
The Chicago Blackhawks ended up trading Taylor Hall away. However, there is a source that believes that they tried to keep him.
After the Hurricanes shocked the hockey world over the weekend, Mikko Rantanen still may elect for free agency. Would this make the trade not worth what they gave up?
The Carolina Hurricanes will look to earn points in a sixth consecutive game as they host the Chicago Blackhawks (16-29-5). The Canes are coming off of a 4-0 shutout victory over the New York Rangers and tonight will also be the first home games for Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall with their new club.
