Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said she is ready to share her recommendation and vision for the next chief of the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall has made her choice on who she believes should fill the position left open by the outgoing chief of police.

Mendenhall announced Thursday that she is recommending Brian Redd, head of the state Department of Corrections, to take over the Salt Lake City Police Department. Redd has served in his current role since mid-2023, overseeing the state’s two prisons and other correctional centers.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown announced he will be stepping down as Chief of Police - a position he has held since 2015.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall is set to announce her recommendation for the city's new police chief, one week after Mike Brown made a surprise announcement to step down.

"This was my decision," Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall told reporters Friday after attending a hearing on a bill that would ask cities similar to Salt Lake City's size to partner with state police on issues or risk losing out on state funds.
