SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit Thursday against the state of Illinois seeking access to its complete, unredacted voter registration database, including sensitive personal data such as dates of birth, driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers.

Chicago vote-by-mail applications open for 2026 primary election
CHICAGO - Chicagoans can now apply to vote by mail for the March 17, 2026 primary election. Voters may request a ballot online and must choose one political party ballot: Democratic, Republican, Libertarian or nonpartisan, which includes referenda only. Illinois law allows voters to select only one part for a primary election.
