WASHINGTON – By allowing Texas Republicans to redraw the state’s congressional map, the Supreme Court has kickstarted a nationwide partisan arms race over who holds a critical level of power in Washington during the final two years of President Donald Trump 's second term.
Thanks to the Supreme Court's ruling, Republicans are expected to win five extra seats in the House of Representatives.
The Dec. 4 ruling, which overturned a lower court injunction issued two weeks earlier, comes just four days before the deadline for Texas candidates to file to run in the March primary elections.
Candidates have until Monday to file to run in the primary election. Many have been waiting for the legal battle to play out before doing so.
