In Beijing, China, thousands of commuters were trapped on the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway on Wednesday, China's The People's Daily reported.

By 9pm, 61,688 people had left the city using the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge checkpoint, a three-year high, while 31,589 entered via the control point.

Images of toll booths on the 2272km-long G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway show cars backed up on both sides. Motorists were reportedly left suffering at least 10-hour delays.
