BOSTON — The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles has apparently reversed itself, and starting Thursday, owners can once again register their Japanese import Kei cars, trucks and vans. Kei vehicles that are already registered may continue their existing registration and renewals, without interruption, MassDOT said Tuesday.

The state still plans to formally review the safety of the small Japanese vehicles later, however.
RMV gives green light to kei car registrations
“At this time, owners of Kei Vehicles will be able to register these vehicles effective September 18, 2024. Kei Vehicles that are already registered may continue their existing registration and renewals, without interruption,” the RMV said. The agency is forming “plans for conducting a formal study” in the future, it said in its announcement.
