The Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm tomorrow, 27 November. Hence, heavy rainfall expected for Chennai.

A developing weather system prompted a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in several Tamil Nadu districts. Chennai and surrounding areas are under yellow and orange alerts for heavy rainfall through November 30.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued red alerts for Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal districts on Tuesday, predicting extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20.4 cm.

The deep depression is set to bring significant rainfall to coastal districts like Nagai, Karaikal, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, and Ramanathapuram. These areas are likely to bear the brunt of the weather system. The storm’s proximity is expected to bring intense rainfall to the Delta region, which could result in localized flooding and waterlogging.

CHENNAI: With a weather system intensifying into a depression over the Bay of Bengal, the IMD on Monday issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in three central districts on November 26 and two more districts on November 27.

The latest bulletin from the IMD suggests that this depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.
