Cuba said on Wednesday it would keep schools closed and non-essential workers home through Sunday as the crisis-racked Caribbean island nation struggled to recover from the collapse of its power grid last Friday and Hurricane Oscar this week.

Cuba has had four electric grid collapses since Friday, and most of the country remains in the dark as slow progress is made to restore power.

A five-year-old boy and his mother, along with a 92-year-old man, are among the six people dead after Hurricane Oscar hit the coastal city of Baracoa and nearby areas in the eastern province of Guantánamo in Cuba as a Category 1 storm on Sunday, bringing heavy rains and flash flooding in a region that has been without electricity since Friday.
