Ten-year-old Sara Sharif likely experienced "daily pain and suffering" over several weeks before her death, a court heard. Injuries she suffered before her body was found at her family home in August last year were "noticeable" and "obvious", expert witness Niall Martin told the Old Bailey.

Sara Sharif’s teacher twice saw her at school with bruises on her face five months before she was found dead, a jury has heard. Helen Simmons told the Old Bailey that Sara said she “had fallen over on some roller-skates" after she saw her injuries in March 2023.

She was discovered dead in a bed at the family home on Hammond Road in Woking, after her father Urfan Sharif called Surrey Police during the early hours of 10 August to report he had “beat her” as she was being “naughty”, and that she had died.

Sara Sharif had suffered an “extremely rare” fracture in her neck, which a radiologist said he had “never seen” in a child before. Examinations showed she had an injury to her hyoid bone in her throat, which was likely to have been caused between six to 12 weeks before her death.
