Bangladesh began buying 200,000 tonnes of rice and paddy from local farmers on Tuesday to boost emergency food stocks to 3 million tonnes in the fiscal year to June 2009, officials said.
Bangladesh, the fourth biggest rice-producing country in the world, produces around 39 million tons of rice annually to feed its 170 million people, with 130 lab-developed high-yielding varieties.
According to trade sources, Raipur-based rice exporter has bagged the tender to supply 50,000 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh at $ 393.30 per tonnes.
