The bill’s supporters had hoped to steer customers away from gas-burning ranges that could could expose them to nitrogen dioxide and other pollutants.

The bill would have made California the first state to mandate labels warning consumers of gas stoves' health impacts.

In a veto message, Newsom said that he “appreciated the author’s intent to provide consumers information,” but the language of the label is “highly prescriptive” and couldn’t be altered without future amendments.

Similar measures aimed at using labels to inform consumers about the air pollution emissions associated with gas stoves have failed in Illinois and New York.

Tech executives opposed the measure, which would have required companies to test the most powerful AI systems before release.
