The first results have begun to trickle in a Winnipeg federal byelection, with the NDP leading as it works to hang onto a seat against the Conservatives, which have mounted a fierce campaign to flip it blue.

The New Democrats have declared a federal byelection victory in their Winnipeg stronghold of Elmwood—Transcona. The NDP candidate Leila Dance told supporters in a tearful speech that even though the final results weren’t in, she expected she would see them in Ottawa.

The NDP maintained its stronghold in the Winnipeg riding of Elmwood — Transcona in a tight byelection race with the Conservatives, but was locked in a dead heat with the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois in the Montreal riding of LaSalle—Émard—Verdun as of early Tuesday morning.
