CAMP PENDLETON — Ordnance fired over the 5 Freeway at Saturday’s 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton prematurely detonated, striking and damaging a California Highway Patrol vehicle that was part of Vice President JD Vance’s detail, the CHP said Sunday.

An artillery round prematurely detonated over I-5 Freeway during a Marines celebration event, damaging a CHP car with flying shrapnel.

According to California Highway Patrol, the explosive ordinance that was fired over the freeway detonated overhead prematurely, striking and damaging a patrol vehicle.

A patrol vehicle was struck by shrapnel from an artillery round that was fired during Saturday's event at Camp Pendleton, officials said.

A live-fire demonstration is planned at Camp Pendleton on Saturday, Oct. 18. It coincides with "No Kings" protests planned statewide.

CHP reports that a section of Interstate 5 in San Diego — from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road in Oceanside — will be closed from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m
