Initiative 2066, sponsored by the conservative group Let's Go Washington, sought to counter existing laws encouraging utilities to move away from natural gas.

With over three million votes tallied in the election, 51.43% (1,593,392 votes) were in favor of approving I-2066 while 1,505,028 votes, or 48.57%, were cast to reject the initiative.

Initiative 2066 prohibits state and local governments from restricting or “discouraging” Washingtonians’ use of natural gas in their homes and businesses.

The initiative went into effect Thursday. “Millions of voters have spoken and Initiative 2066 is now law,” BIAW Executive Vice President Greg Lane said in a news release.
