Tropical Storm Melissa has formed in the Caribbean, making it the 13th named storm in the Atlantic this year, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday morning. The NEXT Weather team at CBS Miami said no direct impacts are expected to South Florida at this time,

Though the risk to Florida is low, parts of the Caribbean are in peril. Tropical Storm Melissa is expected to power up to a major hurricane. Though its chances of affecting Florida are low, it can't be ruled out.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hurricane Melissa has intensified into a major hurricane and may reach category 5 status before making landfall in Jamaica. Melissa went through rapid intensification yesterday. This means that within a span of 24 hours, it went from a relatively strong tropical storm to a major hurricane.

Melissa intensified Saturday afternoon into a Category 1 hurricane. It will continue to strengthen before making landfall as a Major Category 4 hurricane in Jamaica on Tuesday. The storm will drop two to three feet of rain on the island, creating catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and landslides.
