The event is a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Our own Tamara Berg was the event emcee. Before the plunge, there was a 5K trail so people could warm up before cooling off in the cold water.
The top team fundraiser was Western Michigan University's Sigma Tau Gamma, who raised over $20,000. Those still wishing to donate to Special Olympics Michigan can do so on their website here.
The first Polar Bear Plunge for SONJ was held in Point Pleasant Beach in 1994, when 85 people raised a little over $22,000, said Jeremy Davis, a Special Olympics spokesman.
