Rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, and the India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall for three more days in the state, starting November 27, when the deep depression is likely to become a cyclonic storm.

A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and expected to become a cyclonic storm, named Fengal, by November 27. It's currently southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, and moving towards the Tamil Nadu coast.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for rain for Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in Puducherry.

The deep depression is set to bring significant rainfall to coastal districts like Nagai, Karaikal, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, and Ramanathapuram. These areas are likely to bear the brunt of the weather system. The storm’s proximity is expected to bring intense rainfall to the Delta region, which could result in localized flooding and waterlogging.

A deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal is forecasted to develop into a cyclone by Wednesday. It will likely move towards Tamil Nadu, while closely missing the Sri Lankan coast, according to the India Meteorological Department.

IMD has issued a red alert for Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai districts and the Karaikal area on November 26, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in many places across these four districts. On November 27, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and the Karaikal area have been issued a red alert.

India Meteorological Department said the depression over Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression.

The deep depression lay about 310 km southeast of Trincomalee, 590 km south-southeast of Nagappattinam, 710 km south-southeast of Puducherry and 800 km south-southeast of Chennai

Moving north-northwestwards at 12 km/h, the storm system is expected to bypass Sri Lanka’s coast and approach Tamil Nadu within the next two days. However, slightly cooler sea surface temperatures closer to the coastline could weaken the system marginally before landfall.
