In this paper, we use the density index to compare and analyze the difference in the development level of highway networks between China and the world's major transportation power countries, and we also analyze the development law of highway network scale.

On July 12, 2022, the "National Highway Network Planning" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport of China was announced to the public. The "Planning" proposes a layout plan for China's national road network to 2035, with a total scale of about 461,000 kilometers.

By 2024, the network encompasses over 1.9 million kilometers of highways, making it one of the most extensive in the world. Key milestones include the completion of major expressways by 2008 and ongoing expansions to enhance connectivity, especially in western and less developed areas.
