Recent research continues to show that there is no health benefit to drinking alcohol, even at low or “moderate” levels. As a result, more people are rethinking their relationship with alcohol, and I’m all for it. The challenge is often figuring out what to reach for instead, especially in social settings. I’ve been testing a number of non-alcoholic options and have found a few that check important boxes. One of the most overlooked factors is sugar content. Sugar is something many people do not

Do you regularly opt for erythritol as a blood-sugar friendly sweetener? You may need to reconsider. New research suggests consumption of erythritol could mean higher oxidative stress and reduced nitric oxide, both of which impair cardiovascular and metabolic health. Findings even connect high circulating erythritol with increased clot risk. Safer alternatives such as monk fruit and allulose (my personal favorite) don’t appear to share these downsides and may offer additional metabolic benefits.

Berberine has become a popular supplement for supporting healthy blood sugar. I was recently asked whether it should be taken before high-carb meals. Here's my perspective: Berberine activates the same metabolic pathway as metformin, called AMPK. While that’s promising, the most effective and reliable way to activate this pathway is through regular movement and exercise. Berberine can be a helpful tool, yet it works best as part of a thoughtful daily routine (supplementing and movement), not as

Today on The Empowering Neurologist, I’m joined by Dr. Melissa Schilling, of New York University, to discuss the empowering topic of Alzheimer’s prevention. As you’re all well aware, this is a subject at the core of my work, and Dr. Schilling’s recent findings, on the role of blood sugar in brain health, could be a game changer. Hope you enjoy. http://www.drperlmutter.com/empowering-neurologist-david-perlmutter-md-dr-melissa-schilling/ | David Perlmutter, M.D.

This is a message of hope, and I want to be sure it comes through clearly: Parkinson’s isn’t just about genetics. While we can’t change our DNA, we can influence many of the other factors that affect risk, such as blood sugar imbalance, toxin exposure, and repeated head trauma. Type 2 diabetes, for example, is linked to a significantly higher risk of Parkinson’s. But because it’s often preventable through nutrition and lifestyle, that gives us more control than we may realize. From your plate to

By 2060, dementia cases are expected to double. While aging may play a role, lifestyle factors are just as critical—and that means there are things you can do today to protect your brain. ✅ Prioritize metabolic health: High blood sugar and insulin resistance increase your risk. Monitoring fasting insulin and wearing a continuous glucose monitor can help you stay on track. ✅ Move your body: Exercise is one of the most powerful ways to protect your brain and reduce risk. When it comes to bloodwork, we want to be in the optimal range, not just the normal range. To achieve that means checking your blood sugar more than once a year during your annual doctor’s visit. I discuss why I think blood sugar control is one of the most important things for global health with @CaseyMeansMD on the Empowering Neurologist. Could GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease? Research continues to point to the importance of blood sugar control and metabolic health for brain health. When blood sugar levels frequently spike and crash, it creates inflammation and oxidative stress—two factors that can damage brain cells and impair memory. Over time, these blood sugar fluctuations create insulin resistance, which has been found to be a key player in Alzheimer’s and other cognitive decline. Keeping b

Most people wouldn’t start their day with a can of soda, but many don’t think twice about a glass of orange juice. The sugar content is nearly identical. I recently spoke to PARADE Magazine about this very issue, highlighting how common “health” foods like orange juice and granola bars can actually spike blood sugar and harm brain health over time: https://parade.com/health/these-snacks-can-increase-dementia-risk-according-to-neuroscientists Understanding how sugar impacts your metabolic health

Food marketing has become very good at borrowing the language of health. Words like “natural,” “plant-based,” and “from coconuts” are often used to create a sense of safety around ingredients that still behave the same way in the body. Sugar is one of the clearest examples of this disconnect. From a metabolic perspective, the source matters far less than the physiological response. Added sugars, regardless of origin, place a burden on blood sugar regulation and insulin signaling. Over time, that

I recently shared about berberine, a natural compound that supports fat metabolism and improves insulin sensitivity in a way similar to metformin. Since then, I’ve been asked whether eating barberries can provide a natural source of berberine. Barberries do contain berberine, usually around 5–7 percent, but the amount varies and you would need to eat a lot to reach an effective dosage. That’s why a high-quality berberine supplement is usually more reliable. Barberries and other nutrient-dense fr

At this point, we've seen ample research that points to an adverse relationship between the development of Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's Disease. As such, we can all agree we should be doing everything we can to PREVENT the development of diabetes. This is why it's troubling to learn so many of us may be raising our risk of this disease by taking a statin drug to lower cholesterol. Let's dive into the research of why this is a serious threat to health. http://bit.ly/2pO7URA | David Perlmutter,

Some of the most powerful chemicals for brain health are not found in a supplement bottle. They are made inside your own body. Your muscles create a group of compounds that support memory, protect neurons, and lower the risk of cognitive decline. These chemicals are released during movement, and they help explain why exercise has such a profound effect on long-term brain health. There is something incredibly empowering about knowing you can create this kind of support from within. All it takes i
