Timing (keep strikes strikes and get shadow zone pitches called strikes by making sure your mitt is moving toward the strike zone during the reception), 2. Your footwork during back picks will depend on if there is a right handed batter, left handed batter and where you’re set up in relation to the batter (how much clearance you have). I got asked “When should I block and when should I pick and throw when someone is attempting to steal?” I always say “learn your range.” Meaning how short of a pitch can you pick cleanly and consistently. In front of the plate, probably a good idea to block (first video). Deep, past the plate, pick and let it fly (second video). Game situation will also have a big impact on your decision. It’s not a good idea to allow the tying or winning run to get to third because you tried to pick and missed.
