This is the young, snow-loving harp seal that we recently admitted. The video was taken from a distance by a trained MMoME responder to assess the seal's health after crowds were kindly moved a safe distance back. This video shows her coughing up sand ingested as a stress response to people and dogs circling her. She is still at our center receiving treatment to help pass the sand. The bad news: she needed help recovering from a human-induced stress event. The good news: she is responding well a

🌊Circuit is Home! 🌊 Earlier this week, we proudly joined Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME) in releasing our sponsored harbor seal, Circuit, back into the Atlantic Ocean in Phippsburg, Maine. 🦭 Discovered in Owls Head as a newborn, Circuit was abandoned and in critical need of care. Thanks to MMoME’s expert rehabilitation and CMP’s sponsorship, he received round-the-clock support, grew strong, and is now thriving in his ocean home. Circuit joins Breaker (2023) and Amp (2024) as part of CMP’s ong

Marine Mammals of Maine releases two seals back into the wild

Evening temperatures have been dropping into the 30s here in Maine and we know what that means... In just a couple of short months, our facility will look like this!❄ This is #8, a juvenile harp seal that needed help earlier this year after stressful encounters with people and dogs on the beach, resulting in her eating sand- a common stress response for harp seals like her. Once in our care, she began receiving treatments to help her pass the sand. Thankfully she responded well to treatment and

Memorial weekend is historically MMoME's busiest weekend of the year-all aspects of marine mammal stranding work peak over the next few days, from the hotline, to responding to cases, to new patients coming in. This harbor seal pup kicked off the busy holiday when he was reported on Flag Island. We are so grateful to the family who found him for being so respectful of this pup, ensuring he had space to rest and giving him the best change of reuniting with his mom. Unfortunately, it was determine

If you couldn't join us for the harp seal release yesterday, or if you need to relive the moment-here's #36 going home. She was sufferring from dehydration and an infection, and unlikely to recover on her own. But thanks to our supporters, she was able to receive the care she needed to get back out where she belongs-this time when she hit the sand, she was a whole new seal compared to how she felt 3 weeks ago. All of us at MMoME are so grateful to you for helping us help her-we can't imagine sea

Here's a little clip of a weanling harbor seal resting on a beach in Biddeford, Maine a few days ago. The people who stumbled across this amazing sighting called our hotline and shared this video to help us identify species, age class, and condition of the seal. It was thin with a few small wounds, but was back in the water and gone shortly after being reported. We hope the seal finds another quiet, safe, and beautiful spot to haul out and rest! If you find a live or deceased marine mammal or se

Another seal returned to the ocean, much healthier and stronger than the last time she saw the beach 🌊 This is #4, a gray seal pup we responded to on Parsons Beach in Kennebunk earlier this year. At release she was unrecognizable compared to the emaciated, dehydrated, lethargic pup we collected a few months ago! | Marine Mammals of Maine

This young harp seal spent the night at our center last night. She was observed eating sand due to stress from being approached too closely by people. This stress behavior can lead to significant health issues, so she was collected for further evaluation. Thankfully, her bloodwork and physical exam were normal otherwise, so after a night of supportive care she was released back to the ocean. The green line is to help us identify her if she shows up again somewhere else. We are so relieved this h

SOUND ON! Last Saturday, beach walkers at Spring Point Light in South Portland were fortunate enough to share the beach with this 5 day old harbor seal pup. We're always educating about how to give seals space...but this pup was loudly following people and their dogs, making it difficult to follow the guidelines! This beahvior is often normal as pups are left alone while their mom finds food for herself. It can certainly be difficult to leave a crying baby seal alone, but thankfully the Spring P

There's a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! At the top of our list is knowing #269 made it home for the holidays. His release yesterday marked the 100th seal we have released to date. We had an amazing group of people come out to celebrate this milestone, reminding us of the incredible community of supporters who have been behind us every step of the way-for all 100 seals! | Marine Mammals of Maine

Harbor seals can be seen in Maine's coastal waters year-round, though we tend to receive far fewer reports of this species during the winter months. This time of year, our field and hospital work shifts to different seal species that are more commonly seen in the Gulf of Maine January-April, such as the harp seal. Watch the video to learn about this amazing and unique species! And sound up for some unique audio too 😉 If you find a harp seal in Maine-or any other live or deceased marine mammal-y

Healthy, strong harbor seal pups sleep hard and play hard-this morning we happened to capture these two between naps! These two patients, one from Scarborough Beach, Maine, and the other from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, are both abandoned harbor seal pups who experienced well-meaning but harmful human interaction, preventing their moms from returning for them. It has taken a few weeks of intensive care at our facility to get them feeling strong enough to act like this, but seeing it makes the many,

We quite often get asked if we are sad when our seal patients get released. The answer is mostly no. By the time our patients are healthy and strong, they are full of energy and curiosity and quickly outgrow our pools and enrichment devices. This video of current patients #60 and #69 who are just about ready to go home is exactly what makes us so happy to get them back to the beach. In their natural habitat they can swim and explore without restriction, our hospital is just a temporary landing s

Look who figured out how to eat fish all by himself! All of our 4 original pup patients have been weaned and are now eating fish. The girls, rescued from Falmouth and Lincolnville, figured out how to eat fish pretty quickly-the boys (rescued from Freeport and Westport Island) took a bit longer. #37 from Westsport Island just recently graduated to full independence! Check out his fish eating process 🐟 | Marine Mammals of Maine
