Mozart composed his String Quintet in B-flat major, K. 174, in 1773 at just 17 years old. Scored for two violins, two violas, and cello, it served as the composer's first entry into a genre that he would later help define, drawing inspiration from the string quintets of his contemporary Michael Haydn.
