1492: Whoops, wrong island! After hunting for gold in Cuba (which Columbus mistook for Japan!), Chris lands on a new island. He christens it *La Isla Española*, or Hispaniola. Thinking he was near Asia, Columbus was actually thousands of miles off, setting the stage for European colonization of the Americas. Talk about a travel fail!
