For as long as you have a chest port every month it needs to be used in some way, shape or form. If you’re actively getting chemo then they flush it with saline before and after they administer each chemo bag which helps keeps the line clear. If you stop chemo then you need to come in once a month to get it flushed with heparin. If you don’t use the port for a long period of time a myelin sheath starts to build up in the port which will cause it to get clogged and lead to further complications.
