The Nesbit family were among the early settlers of the Waxhaw region. John and Sara Nisbet (the spelling was later changed to Nesbit) emigrated from Duns, Scotland, in 1731. Their eldest son, Alexander, was born at sea during their journey to America. In 1753, the family traveled south along the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania, eventually settling on a 350-acre land grant in Rowan County, North Carolina.
