Drama noodle! This particularly dramatic southern hognose snake is displaying a behavior called death feigning. This theatrical display is performed by all species of hognose snake. If the snakes fail to deter an approaching menace - in this case, ARC’s Assistant Field Project Manager Sydney Sheedy 😆 - they will roll over and “die.” Once they determine that they are not actually threatened, they move on with their lives very quickly. Please keep in mind that mice are the main recommended staple food for hognose snakes. Rats can be fed occasionally but tend to be fattier, making mice the healthier choice overall. Other items like earthworms, fish, lizards, salamanders, birds, eggs, and frogs should only be offered as occasional treats, not as a regular diet.
